Reiser Article

What the article and the UEN website had in common was that these both relied heavily on technology and alternative methods of assessment. I don't know how effective, or relavant, using a telgram would be in a classroom, like the Reiser article suggested, but I guess it would be fun to incorporate with a younger classroom. The UEN site that I found that closely mirrored the Reiser article was the Under the Sea lesson. This lesson showed how you could center the instruction around the students. I really liked that the students got to design a newspaper article about the ocean.
I think designing a lesson using the Reiser article as your model would only work in moderation or with an exceptionally motivated class. I think that if you tried to do this method with every class you might run into the problem of some students not participating or falling behind. I don't think that you could do an entire two week lesson plan using this method, maybe one or two days.

  1. I completely agree that the lessons plans from the Reiser article would only work in moderation. They would be engaging and thoughtful, but not every day, and not for replacing instruction.

  2. I agree that students need a variety. What works for some students may not work for others and relying on just technology to teach would get old and might not reach all the students. Teachers need to be flexible in the way the teach and present the materials. Too many times technology can fail just with schedules of computer labs and power break downs.

  3. I felt that the article was focusing more on the interdisciplinary aspect of teaching. Yes, technology was a part of the lessons, but not the whole part. The schedule allowed for a time at the beginning and end for whole group instruction. Of course, just because a model is done in a certain way does not mean that you cannot adapt for your particular class.

  4. One has to remember that while there was group work in the Reiser model there was also time for individual time as well. Breaking it down over several days and weeks allows for students to work in and around all different learning styles just like they will in a work situation. This allows students the opportunity to give and take some, learning how to accommodate others, and learn basic social skills as well as the curriculum.
